If people would just brush their teeth, a disease which this dentist tries to cure would be virtually eliminated. The dentist

says that 28 million people in the United States suffer from advanced periodontitis or gum disease. The disease will cause a

great number of these persons to lose otherwise healthy and undecayed teeth during the prime of life. According to the

director of the University of Washington?s center for research in oral biology, Americans are generally affected by it and

they annually spend $5 billion on dental care even if the disease is not lethal. Read this site if you want

information.

The interdisciplinary fight against gum disease includes research in electrical engineering and biochemistry as well as

studies in the schools of medicine and dentistry. But in spite all these highly advanced research, nothing beats regular

flossing and brushing of the teeth. Collagen is the tissue which connects the teeth to the bone. Plaque is the effect if the

wirelike protein called collagen is disrupted which will eventually cause teeth to loosen.

Plaque plays a significant role here because it consists of 99 percent microorganisms and bugs. It can irritate gums and the

supporting structure beneath. Bacteria develop on the surface of the teeth and soon act as colonizers if proper brushing and

flossing of the teeth is not practiced. The public's demand for a miracle cure intensifies as well as the research because a

lot of people do not brush their teeth. But good news from Europe came about a mouthwash which could prevent plaque build up

by killing bacteria.

According to the dentist, it was in World War II when the British used bactericide chlorohexidine to cleanse surgical

equipment. It was actually applied as a mouthwash by a Danish scientist which seemed to have worked but still with a few

disadvantages. It was dreadful and exciting at the same time for this drug leaves the teeth black after a while. He said that

it also causes a temporary loss of taste. Go to this site for further information on

.

Blackening of the teeth and not being able to taste are nothing compared to a greater problem which is the risk of having

cancer. Quite a breaking news because drugs with the same structure as this has been safe for humans and animals for a long

period of time. And there is yet another problem with the drug. It can cleanse your mouth too much.

Upon sterilizing your mouth, you also kill the bugs. These bugs that you try to kill live in our entire gastrointestinal

tract. They even actually help in food digestion, human metabolism, and in the production of Vitamin K.

I'm not even sure if having a drug that could destroy plaque would be a good or bad thing. I will undeniably put my dollar on

bacteria overreaching drugs. Most people just intentionally ignore gum disease. If they would just brush their teeth, gum

disease could be prevented. The disease is curable if they will just do it. But in my own opinion, most of the public will

not do it.
